Wisla Orphan Camp - 2006 Print E-mail

As a person used to leading worship and ministering on youth camps, I have to admit I was very interested as to how the camp would look in Wisla for children ages 6-13. Children this age can have very difficult personalities in general. This paired with the difficult backgrounds from which many of the kids come from, I really didn’t know what to expect.

The number of people on the camp numbered over one hundred including leaders and guardians. The Christian Rado¶ć Foundation responsible for organising the camp invited a team from Tenessee to run a large part of the program. The group of Americans came prepared to lead the youngsters in Bible study, games and activities for the week. This wasn’t the first time in Poland for most of them, and it showed. They were already accustomed to culture and were able to communicate themselves through translators in a way that would be understandable for the majority of Polish children.

Of course, getting children to sit down and pay attention on the evening programs proved difficult from the start. The team after two days was very exhausted already. This was when our group times in the morning were needed before our youngsters got out of bed. We discussed what was happening during the day and prayed together, focussing on how the Bible teaches us to minister and love the people God puts under our authority. These were very special times, and we wouldn’t have survived without them.

As the week went on, the campers eventually settled down and paid more attention on the morning and evening programs and on the Bible study sessions.  This is where we really had the chance to teach children about who God is, focussing on the story of Moses. An emphasis was also put on how God protects us through his ‘Armour’ (Ephesians 6). This was shown through a series of kid’s skits shown by Dan Aldridge and myself. As I focus on Creative Ministry with my wife in Gdynia, it has been proven to me once more that an audience quite often can relate to a scene played out for them on the stage than just by someone talking. This was especially true for kids of this age. They enjoyed the drama but also paid attention to the meaning explained for them later on.

I was responsible for a group of boys from the Eagle’s Nest Orphanage, just outside of Elblag. As an English teacher in a Christian School working with children of this age, I have had a lot of experience with youngsters from a whole range of home situations and backgrounds. But it was my first time having to live in with a group of kids, keep them under control and teach them at the same time.

By the time we were all ready to present the Gospel on Thursday night, I was completely exhausted. I had been praying for my group, as they were especially difficult to handle. I had no idea what was going to happen. I was overjoyed though that when the invitation was made to accept Christ as Lord and saviour, a young lad from my group came to me. We spoke and I asked what he understood by making this decision. When we prayed for the Lord to come into his life, I was confident, that even at the age of ten, he had a good grasp of what this meant. The rest of my group joined me at the front, and we spoke briefly. I sincerely believe that they were moved, all in a different degree, and that they have seen how God works.

I would especially ask you to pray for that group from Eagle’s Nest. They have contact with Christians who work in their home. I would request of the Lord that the youth would continue to ask questions about God and how He can help them in their daily lives.

I would like to thank the Christian Foundation ‘Radosc’ for all the hard work they have put in to orphans and poor children in Wisla and Poland in general. I believe it important also that you and your churches would keep this organisation in prayer as they continue to expand this ministry over the whole of Poland.
